Wow, what a first day! Competition has at last begun for Team New Jersey and it has been a good one.

Track and Field: Victoria, Carol, Traci, Bobby and Mark all had prelim races today. Highlights included a 4.75 shot put from Victoria and a new personal best of 1:15.48 in the 400m run for Mark .

Bowling: It was prelims for our bowlers today and the highlight had to be Denise Navarro bowling a personal best score of 179, including a 5-7 split. Michael Capone was so exited with the 5-7 split that he ran over and gave her a big hug! First medals will be awarded tomorrow night!

Aquatics: Medley Relay team of Lee, Desimone, McMullen and Hale swam the fastest prelim time out of 11 teams and won their heat. Also Dasiy Desimone swam a personal best of 2:03 in the 100 Backstroke to take 3rd place in prelims. During Opening Ceremony there was a movie played about NJ swimmer Chris Mcmullen. he is now a star and fans have been stopping him to talk about the video.

Bocce: it was a long day for the bocce players as they played 3 games ending up with a 1-2 record. After beating New Hampshire they lost a close one with Michigan and then could not quite beat New Hampshire for a second time as they lost 16-15.  Despite the long day they are excited to get back on the court tomorrow.

Flag Football: It was a good learning experience for the Flag team as they faced 3 games on the first day of competition. They lost a good game to Missouri 32-19 with TD’s from Petterway and Clawson (2). Next up was Indiana and another good game saw the team down 26-13 with TD’s from Schmidt and Petterway. The final game vs Arkansas saw the team hang tough but the exertions of the day caught up and they fell to a 28-14 defeat with TD’s from Clawson and Rodenbeck. Despite the results the team were happy with the way they played and certainly improved as they got used to the field and competition.

Golf: first qualifying rounds saw Tom Azilides shoot a 52 ranking him 6th out of 33 athletes, despite a tough last hole. Chris Harold and his golf partner (and father) Ray shot a  score of 47 to place 4th out of 27.

Soccer: After traveling all the way to Lincoln the NJ team played its first game vs its neighbour Pennsylvania! in a closely fought game the PA team scored late to take a 2-0 victory. NJ also played Montana to a 0-0 tie.

Basketball: First day of pool play saw the NJ team play 2 games. First up was Maryland and the team worked hard and defeated the Maryland team 23-15. The afternoon game pitted NJ vs Wisconsin and this turned into an overtime classic. Down 8 at the half, and 10 early in the 2nd half, NJ battled back to send the game to OT. With a huge crowd watching, Team NJ completed a great comeback to defeat Wisconsin 42-38. It really was an incredible game to be at and credit goes to both teams for putting on such a great show for all the fans. The teams travelled back to the dorms together and shared compliments and laughs, showing great sportsmanship on and off the court.
