A Medal Winning Day – Wednesday Recap and Thursday Schedule

Team NJ had an exceptional day at the 2010 National Games, bringing home a number of medals and ribbons, including 3 Gold. Once again the support of family, friends and teammates was incredible.

Recap.

Bowling: Doubles bowling took place today. The Team of Denise Navarro and Jason Selin bowled a 617 which was good enough for 4th place. Becky and Michael bowled a great game with a 819 which was 54 pins over average and good enough for a Silver Medal. Quote of the day from Michale Capone – “Look Della – everybody loves us!”

Golf: Team NJ golfers concluded their competition today. Individual golfer Tom Azilides shot his best round in over three years, shooting a 46 to give him a 3 round total of 148. This was good enough for the Gold medal for Tom, beating Texas by 3 shots. Chris Harold and Ray Harold started the day tied for 1st in their division. After a steady, straight hitting round they shot a 47 to give them a three round total of 144. This was good enough for the Gold medal, beating out Virginia by one stroke. Congratulations to Team NJ Golf on the perfect tournament!

Basketball: In the last round of pool play Team NJ faced Maryland. They once again started strong and won easily 27-11, with the whole squad contributing to the victory.

Aquatics: Chris McMullen swam in his first individual prelim today. He swam a 2:33 in the 200 backstroke which was the fastest qualifying time in his event. Katherine Cajulo moved to the finals of the 50 back with a 3rd place finish PR of 1:01.51. Margo Lee swam to a first place prelim finish in the 50 back. She coasted the last 10 yards so has a lot left for the final. Medal Round: Chris was the first medallist for Team NJ aquatics. Swimming a 2:29 200IM, a PR, Chris brought home the silver medal. Daisy was our second medalist with a close finish in the 100 back, setting a PR on her way to a bronze medal. The 200 medley relay of Margo, Daisy, Chris and Joe logged the fastest time of the day, beating South Dakota to take the Gold medal to the raptuous cheers of the crowd.

Flag Football: Game 1 NJ vs Tennessee. In a hard fought battle, Team NJ lost 27-18. Scorers for Team NJ were Petterway with 2 TD’s and 1 for McCormac. Game 2 vs Nebraska Red saw Team NJ snatch a dramatic win from the jaws of defeat, again scoring late in the game and holding on for a dramatic win. Scoring TD’s were Petterway and Clawson. Pat Rhoads started the game with a defensive score, forcing a safety with a phenomenal tackle of the Nebraska QB.

Track and Field: “Awesome”, said track coach Larry Hanko describing the day the team had just completed.  After todays events, the team holds 1 gold -( Mark Halpern in the 400m), 6 silver (Victoria, Tracey (2), Bobby, Carol and Christina, 2 fourth (Carol and Victoria) and one fifth (Bobby). Highlight of the day had to be Traci Fischer who was 4th coming into the home straight in the 400m, but found an extra gear in the last 100m to push herself into silver place.

Soccer: Team NJ played Tennessee in the final pool game and tied 1-1 with a goal from Andi Hoz de “Goala”. In medal round action  Team NJ soccer beat Michigan 1-0 on an own goal, with Shaun Woolf outstanding defensively as captain of the team.

Bocce: The Team of Shivonne and Lisa played some great bocce and completed their competition earning a bronze medal.

THURSDAY SCHEDULE:

AQUATICS. AM: JOE IN THE 50 BACK, 4X25 RELAY FINAL WITH MARGO, JOE, KATHERINE AND TRACEY. PM: CHRIS AND DAISY 400 FREE, JOE 100 FREE, CATHERINE AND MARGO 50 FREE, KATHERINE 25 BUTTERFLY, DAISY 100 BREASTSTROKE. AM RACES ARE LATE IN THE SESSION, PM RACES ARE SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE AFTERNOON.

BASKETBALL: 9:30AM VS MARYLAND

BOCCE: MALE TEAM PLAY AT 8:45AM FOR THE GOLD. MEDAL CEREMONY FOR MALE AND FEMALE TEAMS START AT 10AM

BOWLING: TEAM BOWLING FOR ALL BOWLERS START AT 9:21AM

FLAG FOOTBALL: 5PM VS NEBRASKA, THEN EITHER 7:30PM OR 8:30PM – NOTE TIME CHANGE!

GOLF: COMPETITION COMPLETE

SOCCER: 11AM VS MONTANA

TRACK: CHRISTINA 3000M @8AM, 1500 @ 2:50PM. TRACEY 100M @ 12:54. MARK HALPERN 800M @ 11:10 AND 1500M @3:38. BOBBY FREDERICKS 100M @ 1:39. VICTORIA 800M WALK @10AM. CAROL 100M @12:42PM.  4X100M RELAY CHRISTINA, TRACEY, MARK, BOBBY AT 9:14AM.
