World Games Spotlight: Aquatics

Back in January, we announced that seven athletes from New Jersey have been selected to compete in the World Games in Athens, Greece this summer.  Now that this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is just weeks away, we’d like you to meet the New Jersey delegates to Team USA competing in each sport.

Aquatics: Margo Lee and Christopher McMullen

Margo Lee

Margo Lee, 23, lives in Princeton Junction, NJ and has been involved with Special Olympics for 15 years. When she’s not competing, she enjoys scrapbooking, music and dancing.  She works as a Front Desk Assistant at Gold’s Gym.

In addition, Margo completed Athlete University and is a Global Messenger.  She has given numerous speeches on behalf of Special Olympics.  Margo says, “Special Olympics has helped me be a better team member, a better athlete and has helped me make new friends.”

Christopher McMullen

Christopher McMullen is a 20-year-old from Freehold, NJ.  He has been involved in Special Olympics for 13 years.  He says, “I feel very proud to be on Team USA. It is an honor to be chosen for this team.  It gives me the chance to work, train hard and compete against the best Special Olympics athletes in the WORLD!”

Christopher is a member of three swim teams, earning a Varsity Letter his freshman year in high school.  He also enjoys playing the clarinet and singing in the choir.

On June 19, Margo and Christopher begin their journey in Baltimore,MD, where all the athletes on Team USA will convene for a celebratory send-off.  Upon arrival in Greece, Team USA athletes will spend four days in the host town of Isle of Rhodes where, through sporting, cultural and artistic events, they will have the opportunity to adapt to a new environment, experience Greek culture, enjoy the natural beauty and traditional cuisine, and train before the Games.

The World Games Opening Ceremony on June 25 will kick off a week of competition that draws to a close on July 4.  Athletes and coaches return to the United States on July 6.
