World Games Spotlight: Bocce

The countdown continues – less than a month until our seven New Jersey athletes on Team USA depart for Athens, Greece to compete in the 2011 World Games.  Meet another New Jersey delegate, Padraig Westgate, who is competing in Bocce.

Padraig Westgate

Padraig, 28, is from Howell, NJ.  He has been involved with Special Olympics for 21 years, competing in bowling and floor hockey as well as bocce, for which he won medals in at the 2010 National Games.

Proud to be competing at World Games, he says, “I didn’t think it could get any better than going to Nebraska and competing in Nationals and winning a bronze and gold medal.  Now GREECE!  I just can’t believe it.  I don’t know if I am more excited about playing bocce there or meeting all the new people.  Can you stand it?!”

He says Special Olympics has changed his life by helping him make new friends and keep physically active.  A high school graduate, Padraig is employed at Monmouth ARC.  He loves to travel to Atlantic City and is a big fan of Bruce Springsteen and KISS.

On June 19, Padraig begins his journey in Baltimore, MD, where all the athletes on Team USA will convene for a celebratory send-off.  Upon arrival in Greece, Team USA athletes will spend four days in the host town of Isle of Rhodes where, through sporting, cultural and artistic events, they will have the opportunity to adapt to a new environment, experience Greek culture, enjoy the natural beauty and traditional cuisine, and train before the Games.

The World Games Opening Ceremony on June 25 will kick off a week of competition that draws to a close on July 4.  Athletes and coaches return to the United States on July 6.

Best of luck Padraig!
