Lt. Kevin Murphy Selected for Final Leg of Torch Run at World Games

Lt. Kevin Murphy departs Monday for Athens to run in the Final Leg of the World Games Torch Run

Eighteen years ago, Lt. Kevin Murphy of the Port Authority Police Department was asked by a fellow Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) volunteer Robert Driscoll to drive the water truck in his leg of the Torch Run.  That weekend, Kevin attended his first Summer Games.

“After attending that first Opening Ceremony, I was hooked,” says Kevin.  “The high-fives, hugs and smiles given back to us by the athletes exceeded what I was expecting.”

Kevin has been involved with Special Olympics New Jersey ever since.  He is coordinator of the Shore Run/Island Beach leg of our state LETR and has volunteered at Summer Games, Polar Bear Plunges, Plane Pulls, and the Snow Bowl.  He also has attended several LETR international conferences as one of New Jersey’s representatives.

This year, Kevin’s involvement will reach an exciting new level as he heads to Athens, Greece on June 6 for the 2011 Summer World Games.  He has been selected to run the Final Leg of the LETR preceding the World Games as part of an international team of 145 members which includes 101 Law Enforcement Officers, 10 Special Olympics athletes, and support personnel.

This Final Leg Team will serve as Guardians of the Flame® as they run the “Flame of Hope” throughout Greece, Cyprus and Istanbul.  The lighting of the Flame will take place at the Sacred Site of Pnyx, opposite the Acropolis of Athens, on June 9.  In keeping with the tradition, the rays of the sun light the Flame and the entire ceremony will take place along the lines of the original Torch Lighting of the Olympic Games.

Following the Flame Lighting Ceremony, the Final Leg Team will pass in front of the Acropolis, the Herodeios Theatre, the Museum of Acropolis, the Parliament and the Presidential Palace, where a Welcome Ceremony will take place.  On Friday, June 10, the Torch Runners split into three teams and the journey of the Flame begins.  This journey doesn’t end until June 25, when the cauldron is lit during the Opening Ceremony of the 2011 World Games.

Kevin, a 26-year veteran of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police, and the rest of the Final Leg Team are charged with creating awareness and excitement for Special Olympics and World Games, as well as to encourage support of and attendance at the World Games.

We wish Kevin all the best as he carries out this mission.
