Winter Games: Day 2

Today is the first day of competition here at Winter Games! We all woke up to a lightly falling snow, which set the tone for a great day of winter sports.

Energy was high as dozens of athletes took to the slopes at Mountain Creek for Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding. They started with practice runs around 8:45 a.m. and then progressed into time trials. Over at the drop zone, Snowshoeing and Cross Country Skiing kicked off with warm-ups around 9:30 a.m. followed by the first round of preliminary competition. Figure Skating and Speed Skating competition started at 10 a.m. after warm-ups on the ice down the road at Skylands Ice World.

During all of this, we also welcomed 20 Young Athletes from CE Lawrence School in the Sussex-Wantage Regional School District for their first-ever snowboarding experience. They joined us at Riglet Park, where the instructors guided the excited five- to seven-year-olds through the movements and sensations of snowboarding in a fun and safe environment. Everyone left with huge smiles on their faces. I’m sure we’ll see many of them competing at Winter Games soon!

This afternoon, athletes will compete in Super G Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding, Cross Country Skiing 500M finals, Snowshoeing 100M finals and Speed Skating finals.

Even though it’s a long day out in the cold, the athletes have another fun night ahead of them. Dinner at the Grand Cascades Lodge will be delicious, but what they are really looking forward to is the Winter Dance!

Be sure to follow us on Facebook for real-time photos and updates. Official results will be posted on the SONJ website later this week.
